Kamikawa Town lies at the foot of the Daisetsuzan mountain range, known in Ainu as Kamui Mintara, “The Playground of the Gods.”
Here, clear, delicious water and pristine air meet some of Japan’s shortest summers and longest winters.
A place where the beauty of nature creates ideal conditions for brewing sake.
Made together with the local community, our sake is first enjoyed by the people of Kamikawa and shared through word of mouth.
We produce only limited quantities, and every sake is a Junmai brewed by hand in small batches.
This is our small step toward revitalizing the local community.
Kamui Mintara
— “The Playground of the Gods”
Kamikawa Town, Hokkaido, is a small town of just under 3,000 people at the foot of Daisetsuzan National Park, with an average annual temperature of around 5.5°C.
The town is also the birthplace of Sara Takanashi, one of Japan’s leading women’s ski jumpers, and is home to Sounkyo Onsen, which attracts around two million visitors each year.
In 2017, we established our brewery in this community.
Even before the brewery opened, a group of around a dozen local residents came together to form “Sakagura Sasaetai,” meaning “Those Who Support the Brewery.” They volunteered their time, helping with everything from brewery work to mowing the grounds in their free time.
In return for their support, we are committed to brewing delicious local sake that is loved by the community and contributes to the revitalization of Kamikawa.
Supported by the Community
A Brewery Rooted in the Community.
Our brewing water is soft water at an ideal temperature of around 7°C, sourced from springs fed by the snow-capped Daisetsuzan mountains.
We use three varieties of Hokkaido-grown sake rice—Suisei, Ginpu, and Kitashizuku—grown by farmers we know and trust.
Out of respect for these farmers and for Kamikawa’s pure natural water,Ryokkyugura produces only Junmai sake: Junmai, Junmai Ginjo, and Junmai Daiginjo.
Brewing the Character of the Land
“Kamikawa” is a regional sake available exclusively in Kamikawa Town, Hokkaido.
It can be purchased at local liquor stores and convenience stores, but it is not sold at our brewery shop or official online store.
As a result, visitors from across Hokkaido and beyond make the journey to Kamikawa Town specifically to seek out this local sake.
For us, this is a small step toward making sake that is loved by the local community and revitalizing the region.
